POP POP POP: AN INTERACTIVE JOURNEY|KAOHSIUNG

POP! POP! POP!

POP! POP!

Co-curation

Locality of the sound

「POP! POP! POP!

POP! POP! POP! An Interactive Journey

Curated by Brightext as the first exhibition to be presented by Kaohsiung Music Center, “POP! POP! POP! An Interactive Journey” is named after the phenomenon when inspirations or creative epiphanies “Pop” into our minds. The first floor of the exhibition is an overview of the pop music industry in Taiwan while following the concept of “public curation”, giving visitors a chance to voice their thoughts on what pop music is.

The “Sounds of the South” section of the exhibit’s second floor focuses on the musical and cultural lineage of Taiwan’s southern region. Aside from including keywords in interactive sound installations representative of southern Taiwan as chosen by visitors, this area also provides an in-depth look at the culturally significant individuals and incidents in Kaohsiung’s music history.

The flowing energy of Music

In response to the white beams and columns that shuttle through the high-rise space of the two floors, we chose black as the main color that connects the public space of the building and the exhibition space of the two floors. The installation titled "Beating" at the entrance to the exhibition hall lets visitors interact with a huge black mirror with their hands, freely mixing and matching audio clips created by electronic music artist Fish.the; the dark magnetic liquid in the center of the mirror also fluctuates and transforms into various abstract forms according to the input and interactions of visitors, symbolizing the unpredictable and dynamic energy of pop music.

Co-curation

Co-curation was a core concept we wished to incorporate into this exhibition since we felt that an interactive discourse, both in-person and online, would help further elevate the interactive experience. Each section of was also curated and designed with corresponding sound and audio elements. The different colored boxes on the first floor represent the backstage and production aspects of music scenes, such as recording studios, audio engineering rooms, and record stores. The audience can listen to the dedicated audio content, such as interviews with industry veterans, in each section through headphones. A music video production section also allows visitors to become their own stars in front of a green screen, which is available for download just a QR code scan with their phone away. In the “Items of Sound” section, visitors are given a chance to examine and learn about the various formats used to record and distribute music since the dawn of the record industry. These include early phonographs, shellac and vinyl records, and players, to the more recent formats such as portable CD and MD players. In “The Story of Pop” section, visitors are invited to share their personal stories of specific pop songs, which the exhibit collects and catalogs into a library of memories. With the organic input of the audience, the exhibit continually gains nutrition, further expands and evolves.

Locality of the sound

Located on the first floor, the exhibit “A Stream of Teleportation” incorporates a ten-meter-tall circular projection, with various soundscapes of southern Taiwan interacting, converging, and overlapping with each other, which is based on input given to the “A Melody of Our Island” on the second floor. The Brightext curation team visited cities, towns, and villages in southern Taiwan to collect keywords and phrases from residents that became the building blocks of the multimedia mixing installations. Visitors can also use these mixed media elements to create their version of a soundscape of southern Taiwan, with these creations finally converging and becoming a magical representation of a collective project from participants.

Traces of Action

“POP! POP! POP! An Interactive Journey” incorporates the concept of public participation across all seven of its exhibition sections. Building upon the collective consciousness of residents of southern Taiwan, visitors’ words, images, and sounds generated within the exhibition are also incorporated into the overall narrative. This exhibit reflects the mobility and close connective relationship between popular music, culture, and various social groups by mimicking these dynamics in our curational directive of public curation.
