DEMOCRATIC TIMES MUSEUM |TAICHUNG

Democratic Times Museum

Located in Wufeng, Taichung, theDemocratic Times Museum was a curational project by Brightext to transform the now-defunct Taiwan Provincial Assembly building into an exhibition celebrating the democratization of Taiwan. As the building is a historical heritage site possessing a dome design, we used this to imagine a giant time installation. The installation would not only be a testament of time to the building’s significance in the history of democracy on the island but as the center of the light sculpture’s time dial. Named Democracy Theater, these elements would coalesce into a clock-like art piece, making the side corridors of the building into time dials, while using these points of time to divide the exhibition into a total of 1+6 exhibitions which focus on the hundred-year struggle in Taiwan’s fight for democracy.

An interactive experience connecting historical heritage sites

We converted the original spaces, such as the Provincial Assembly president's office and Provincial Assembly Hall, into a series of interactive learning experiences. These spaces were connected by QRCODE ticket cards, inviting visitors to find clues in the heritage site, including a slot machine installation that quizzes historical knowledge, a motion capture device inspired candidates asking for popular support on vehicles during the election cycle, and an interactive platform for learning the legislative process. At the end of this, visitors are invited to insert their ticket cards into the ballot box as if they were casting a vote as a member of the Provincial Assembly. These votes are then calculated in real-time, which leads to these various policies enacted upon a virtual city that reflects these decisions, showing the close relationship between a democratic system and the interaction between individual citizens. In addition to the interactive multimedia experience, we have combined cultural artifacts exhibits in a handcrafted design space. In addition to the interactive multimedia experience, we have presented cultural artifacts exhibits in a handcrafted design space, including early campaign literature and handouts, a detailed scale model of the pro-democracy movement, and a film shown on a tube TV. We have also invited artists to draw hundreds of sketches and combined them with mechanical installations to recreate the scene of the first certified pilot in Taiwan's history, Hsieh Wen-da, piloting an airplane over Tokyo to petition for a Taiwanese parliament during Japanese rule.

Dome light sculpture recording the time of democracy

Located in a round dome structure, the Provincial Assembly Hall was once where hundreds of Assembly Members discussed, debated, and sometimes argued over issues for their respective electrets. The hall now serves as a lecture space under the Legislative Yuan for democratic education. As if frozen in time and space, the early seats of the legislators, the gavel, the press gallery, and the analogous counters have been preserved intact. By examining at the historical context and events that once occurred here, we transformed the dome into a light sculpture theater. By combining painter Zhizhu Lin’s intricate Nihonga painting with music, animation, and video, we were able to construct an exhibit that let the heritage of the Provincial Assembly conduct a conversation about “time” with visitors, with audience members enjoying the dome’s light show while sitting in the same seats once used by members of the Provincial Assembly.
